To help it with this award, the company ALBA commissions the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT). The Institute looks at the amount of primary resources and greenhouse gases that are saved through recycling activities. To do this, it uses a specially devised method method to compare the amount of resources and greenhouse gases involved in primary production with the amount involved in recycling. By using material flow management for paper, cardboard and light packaging, the Deutsche Wohnen Group saved a total of 7,842 tons of resources and, in addition, 1,040 tons of greenhouse gases in 2016. In doing so, the company succeeded in maintaining its resource economies at the same level for the third successive year since 2014 – despite a growing number of employees.
The Berlin-based ALBA Group is a waste disposal and recycling company. It has offices and plants throughout Europe and in Asia, and has just under 8,000 employees. Through its recycling activities in 2016, the company was able to save a total of 36.2 million tons of primary resources and 4.3 million tons of greenhouse gases.
