As Holger Rentel, a director at Deutsche Wohnen explains, “With our takeover of the GETEC Media Group and its employees as of 1 October 2018, we are expanding our skills considerably so that we can take much better advantage of the many and varied opportunities for the real estate industry created by digitisation. We will, for example, be able to increase our efforts to develop and deploy needs-oriented solutions aimed at our target groups.”
Thomas Wagner, CEO of the GETEC Group, adds, “GETEC and Deutsche Wohnen have been working together successfully for years. We are now jointly taking one step further and driving forward the process of digitisation in the real estate industry. This means that the GETEC Group will continue to focus on its core business of local, efficient and green energy solutions whilst benefitting at the same time from its digitisation partnership with Deutsche Wohnen.”
GETEC Media GmbH was formed in 2014 from within the Magdeburg-based energy provider GETEC. The company specialises in ultra-modern telecommunications services and also designs product solutions in the area of intelligent networks for buildings. Over 25 employees work in various locations. It is intended that they should continue their employment in the company after Deutsche Wohnen completes the process of integration.
Deutsche Wohnen has a successful and long-standing partnership with the GETEC Group, the parent company of GETEC Media GmbH. This latest transaction means that the partnership will be developed further. The joint enterprise G+D Gesellschaft für Energiemanagement mbH was founded in 2013. In the meantime, it supplies more than 75% of the centrally supplied Deutsche Wohnen portfolio throughout Germany with energy from a wide variety of sources, realising considerable efficiencies with its targeted strategy.
Since this year, the two companies have also been collaborating in the area of intelligent buildings. Recently, for example, a large-scale field study with the smart home system, MiA – My intelligent assistant, was launched. A total of 3,000 households in Berlin from within the holdings of Deutsche Wohnen will soon be able to manage their heating according to their individual needs using a tablet computer display. In future, this smart home system can be extended to include further smart applications, e.g. for lighting control or typical voice-activated devices that are currently on the market.
This is not the first time that Deutsche Wohnen has invested directly in start-ups. Last year, for example, it concluded an extensive cooperation agreement with the provider of the keyless access system KIWI and acquired a minority stake in the company. Following this agreement in 2017, the process of successively installing KIWI in the main entrance doors of all the buildings in Deutsche Wohnen’s holdings has been underway.
In addition, Deutsche Wohnen recently announced its investment in the prop tech company VRnow, which specialises in digitising the floor plans of properties. The initial joint goal is to digitise all the interior floor plans in the portfolio of Deutsche Wohnen. Thereafter, the aim is to extend this process to the exterior of the buildings.
Last year, Deutsche Wohnen also carried out the project B-Colab in cooperation with the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. Female students on the master’s course in online communication lived in a Deutsche Wohnen apartment and explored the many possibilities for smart living on a practical, day-to-day basis.
Deutsche Wohnen is one of the leading publicly listed property companies in Germany and Europe with a business focus on managing and developing its portfolio, which consists mainly of residential properties. As at 30 June 2018, the portfolio comprised 164,000 units in total, of which 16,000 were residential and 2,500 commercial. The company is listed in the Deutsche Börse’s MDAX and is also included in the leading indices EPRA/NAREIT, STOXX® Europe 600 and GPR 250..
