Our support at a glance

We are aware that for some tenants, due to the current developments in the corona pandemic – and depending on the job situation – the current situation is a major challenge. If you are having difficulty paying rent, please contact our customer service.

In the event of a possible deferral, the obligation to pay remains. This duty has only been deferred. We therefore recommend you pay what you can at present.

The German federal government has adopted the “Protecting Tenants in the COVID-19 Pandemic” Act. This rent moratorium is aimed at easing the immediate financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on tenants. It is funded by the German federal and state governments.

Landlords are not permitted to terminate tenancies on the grounds of unpaid rent between 01 April 2020 and 30 June 2020 if the rent was unpaid due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Whether it’s provided by the German federal and state governments or local authorities: the state is available to help in the coronavirus crisis with subsidies, deferred payments and housing benefit. You can find support and the right point of contact for your situation here.

Housing benefit for loss of earnings

Depending on your municipality, you can apply for special housing benefit. More information is available from your local authority, such as the Citizens’ Offices in Berlin: https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/120656.

Tax support measures/payment deferrals

If you are a taxpayer and can prove that you’ve been badly affected by the coronavirus crisis, you can apply to defer your tax payments. This application is made to the relevant district tax authority. It covers VAT, income tax and corporation tax.

The tax authority collecting the tax to be deferred is responsible for processing the deferral application. More information:

Financial support from the federal and state governments

Financial support is aimed primarily at sole traders and small and medium-sized businesses. In all federal states, they are able to apply for grants from the states’ investment banks or local finance ministries. The relevant bodies are currently extremely busy. Please note that there may be delays in approving your application.

In addition to the emergency support measures introduced by the German federal and state governments, we have set up our own support fund worth EUR 30 million. These funds are intended to support commercial and residential tenants who are having difficulty paying rent and small businesses, contractors, social organisations and projects we have worked with as partners for many years. With this fund, we want to help prevent financial problems turning into social hardship.

Tenants who are having difficulty paying rent can contact our customer service at any time. The federal government’s rent moratorium currently offers you protection if you have fallen into payment difficulties as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Solidarity

A strong neighbourhood spirit, mutual aid and social cohesion always give a considerable boost to well-being in the local community – in the coronavirus crisis and beyond.

Please continue to keep an eye on the people around you. Please offer support where you can, such as by offering to help with people’s shopping. Please also continue to adhere to the requisite social distancing and hygiene rules on Deutsche Wohnen properties and in public to help prevent the virus from spreading further.
